Profitability From Pallets Pallets, long regarded as one of the simplest form of equipment within the warehouse, are going high tech. Pallets are more valuable than ever with recent advances. "Companies are beginning to view their pallets in a whole new light," says Randy Zych, president & CEO for Plainfield, IL-based RPM Technologies, Inc., a custom plastic pallet manufacturing company. "Traditional wood pallets, once viewed as an expense, are being replaced by longer lasting, lighter, and more durable plastic pallets. An RPM plastic pallet that costs $13.50 will last at least 75 trips, or $0.18 per trip. A wood pallet that costs $8 will last for about seven trips, or $1.14 per trip. For shippers using loop systems, plastic is the best and most economical way to ship. Not only are plastic products more profitable on a strict shipping cost basis, but they also decrease external costs associated with health care premiums and environmental factors. Many workmen's compensation claims in the United States arise from handling wood pallets. Wood pallets typically splinter, gouge or cause puncture wounds from nails or sharp edges.
